Six persons have been confirmed dead as a mining pit collapsed at Zawan Community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The member representing Jos South Constituency in the state’s House of Assembly Gwottson Fom, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday.
Gwottson said; the victims are youths between the ages of 20 to 27, describing the incident as “heartbreaking and regrettable, and the victims died engaging in illegal activity.
We know that these young persons died carrying out an illegal activity but it is as a result of unemployment that led them into carrying out such task.
People go out of their way to do things considered illegal just to put food on the table of their families. We are not going to apportion blames but it is disheartening and unfortunate that a community will lose six vibrant youths in a day, all these are happening because the country has failed its citizens.
He further advice that people that would like to engage in mining activities should do it the right way. They ought to have licensed as experts.
